It is not uncommon for TOEFL scores to be a component of merit scholarships for international students. Although these scholarships are usually based primarily on GPA and other standardized test scores, poor TOEFL performance can derail an otherwise strong applicant. At Coastal Carolina University, for instance, the top international freshman award is the Presidential Scholarship, which has a current value of about $15,500 per year (60% reduction of full-time tuition). The minimum qualifying total TOEFL score for this award is 110. Towson University's International Student Scholarship, worth $8,000 per year, is awarded to admitted foreign students with high GPAs, but they must have TOEFL scores of at least 77 to qualify. The TOEFL total score benchmark for the University of Cincinnati's Global Scholarship is 79, and the award amount depends on the applicant's credentials ($1,000 to $25,000 per year). TOEFL students are encouraged to explore scholarship opportunities and to note the TOEFL requirements of those scholarships.

Manhattan Review's TOEFL private tutoring and TOEFL prep courses have eased admission to countless highly selective postsecondary institutions, including Harvard, Oxford, Cambridge, Princeton, Stanford, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Pennsylvania, King's College London, the University of Edinburgh, the University of California-Berkeley, the London School of Economics, Johns Hopkins, Dartmouth, Columbia, the University of Virginia, the California Institute of Technology, the University of Melbourne, Australian National University, the University of Toronto, McGill University, the University of California-Los Angeles, the University of Michigan, the University of Johannesburg, and many more.
