Educational Testing Service (ETS), the developer and administrator of the GRE, reports average GRE scores of approximately 150 verbal, 153 quantitative, and 3.5 analytical writing. These statistics are based on more than 1.7 million test-takers over the last three years. Judging by the score percentiles in each area, high verbal scores are less common than high quantitative scores. About 24% of all students received quantitative scores of 160 or higher, but only 14% were able to achieve the same level on the verbal section. A score of 165 is in the 96th percentile for verbal and the 89th percentile for quantitative. Analytical writing scores also suggest that the GRE is a more rigorous assessment of verbal skills than of quantitative abilities. Just 7% of test-takers received analytical writing scores of 5.0 or higher. Selective graduate programs expect their applicants to receive upper-percentile scores on whichever section of the exam is more relevant to a given degree program, but high scores on all sections can substantially increase a candidate's odds of success.
